This week's episode:
Episode 8
Greeting
Sorry it's been so long. Last week's inauguration was remarkably eventful and inspirational.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday named a U.S. special envoy to pursue global agreements to combat climate change. "
She is quoted as saying "The urgency of the global climate crisis must not be underestimated," she said. "Nor should the science behind it or the facts on the ground be ignored or dismissed. The time for realism and action is now. And President Obama and I recognize that the solutions to this crisis are both domestic and global, that all nations bear responsibility and all nations must work together to find solutions."
She appointed Todd Stern as the Special US Envoy on Climate Change.
Clinton said the Special Envoy will serve as a principal adviser on international climate policy and strategy.
"He will be the administration's chief climate negotiator. He will be leading our efforts with the United Nations negotiations and processes involving a smaller set of countries and bilateral sessions," she said.
This came the same day that President Barack Obama, flanked by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, left, and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, signs executive order dealing with energy independence and climate change.
This order "... will be the policy of my administration," he said, "to reverse our dependence on foreign oil while building a new energy economy that will create millions of jobs."
Website As many of you have probably seen our website has gone through a pretty dramatic facelift. We think it is 10x sexier than before. What do you think? Let us know.
All the same features are present including some new ones like a map that shows where everyone is coming from and a page you can go to to donate a few extra dollars.
We also have listed a bunch of hotels that have special discounts available to power shift attendees. These are only available for a limited time so give them a call before they dissappear!
Alright folks -Gotta get back to work. So much to do so little time. See y'all next week.
Episode 7
Greeting
OK- the wheels on Power Shift are spinning and we are ready to really rock Power Shift recruitment through this upcoming crazy inauguration. We are going to highlight a lot of these developments
Power Shift News
So folks in the office here are going back to basis in recruitment. Picking up that telephone and phone banking like mad to guarantee we hit 10,000 registrants for power shift. And to honor their efforts a few of us in the office are growing out our power staches.
Apparently mustaches are back in fashion and considering we are oh so fashion savvy we have decided to join the fun. In case you didn't know - Shaving with stone razors was technologically possible from Neolithic times but the oldest portrait showing a shaved man with a moustache is a Scythian horseman from 300 BC. Join the facebook group Power Staches for Power Shift
Amazingly once we announced the idea we heard a report from the team up at UNH. They had hosted a Mustachio Bashio in support of Power Shift and were already on the band wagon. Check out some pics from their party.
We also went on a walk through of the convention center and it's massive!!!!!!
We better get on recruiting folks. How sad would it be to have this place half full? (United Front -Arrested Development)
Partner Video
The sierra club released a great video congratulating and reminding President Elect Obama what we elected him to do. Check it out:

Other News
So a lot happened over the past weeks, and I hate to have to report this...
Check out the article and watch the whole video on The Huffington Post
For a more upbeat positive news item President Elect Barck Obama published another one of his weekly video addresses. One part of the address is particularily uplifting check this out:
Obama announced the major players on his energy team this weeks. Let's meet the team
(Carol Browner, Steven Chu, Lisa Jackson)
Steven Chu, the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a 1997 corecipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics, as Obama's r secretary of energy.
Lisa Jackson, a former commissioner of New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection who was trained as a chemical engineer, is expected to become administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency
Carol Browner, former EPA chief in the Clinton administration, to serve as a "high-level coordinator" on energy issues—and perhaps something of a "czar" on climate change.
Also... Nancy Sutley to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
This is an amazing team that marks a major change in policy. In the past politicians have been known to appoint friends and close colleagues in many of these positions. Obama is making scientific know-how and hot-to-ness his decision making priority. Very exciting!
International News
The Energy Action Coalition communication director Brianna Cayo Cotter reports from Poland:
International youth launched an impromptu campaign this week "Project Survival" where we basically stalked all governments and delegations to sign a card saying they supported the survival of all countries and peoples. So far we've gotten over 80 countries (developing and developed) to sign on and got the language included in the shared vision document that will lead us into Copenhagen
Set-up a call with group leaders, friends and other club leaders to assign roles and build your Power Shift team. Suggested roles include Recruitment Captain, Fundraising Campaign and D.C. Logistics Captain. Get a conference line at www.freeconferencecall.com
Start a Power Shift facebook group for your school/community and invite everyone you know. Add a video from Power Shift ’07 and a statement about why you’re excited. Then, invite your friends to the national facebook group so we can show how big this is nation-wide!
Research group housing options and places to crash in D.C. including places of worship, family friends and community centers.
Make a list of people, departments, local businesses and organizations you could approach for funding. This could include student government, student activities offices, academic departments, your local Sierra Club chapter, the pizza place you love, etc. Then, start sending emails and follow up with phone calls.
Send out the [Holiday outreach letter] to help raise money for your own travel and registration. It’s a great way to invite your friends and family to be part of the amazing work you’re doing and you never know who will want to help until you ask.
Make a list of 20+ professors and administrators at your school who might have an interest in the youth climate movement. Email them an invitation to help out with recruitment and/or fund raising. Sample emails available at: http://www.powershift09.org/organizers/volunteer
Follow-up with these professors and administrators by calling them and asking to set up a short meeting either before school starts or within the first couple days of the new term.
Tell a high school or other friend who goes to a different school about all the awesome work you’re doing and how they should get involved on their campus. Give them the website and contact info for a local or national organizer.

Movement news
Groups across the country have been actively confronting agencies that fund harmful practices like MTR. Last Week one of these agencies, the Bank of America officially announced last week that they
are particularly concerned about surface mining conducted through mountain top removal in locations such as central Appalachia. We therefore will phase out financing of companies whose predominant method of extracting coal is through mountain top removal. While we acknowledge that surface mining is economically efficient and creates jobs, it can be conducted in a way that minimizes environmental impacts in certain geographies.

CLEAN COAL... boo!
We have been continuously confronting the issue of Clean Coal.
The Reality Coalition behind the campaign - led by Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection, the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, NRDC, and the National Wildlife Federation - understands the importance enacting bold climate and energy policy absent of clean coal, and are fighting the industry's myths in a concerted effort that leading environmental organizations and politicians have thus far been afraid to take on.
This is their first nationally televized ad

EAC News
We are getting super excited about moving into high gear on the Power Shift 09 conference. It is gonna without a doubt be one of the most exciting developments in the Youth Climate Movement 'ever.' Last week we went and checked out the DC convention center which will host the event this year and the ideas started to just flow. We will take the momentum generated from Powershift 07 and PowerVote and roll it into Power Shift 2009. Over 10,000 young people, hundreds of climate activists and numerous coalition partners and organizations all interested uniting our strengths for the betterment of the world and pro-climate movement.
Today Dec 1st is the opening day for the UN climate change conference. As we reported earlier this is an incredibly important moment in history. Erin Condit-Bergren wrote a great article on http://www.itsgettinghotinhere.org highlighting 5 key things to watch for in Poznan:
5. Forests
Back in 1992, the Rio summit was originally supposed to develop a forests treaty in addition to the two well-known agreements which came out of the meeting: The U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity. The forests issue is now coming back in the climate talks in the form of REDD - reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation. The UN does have a way with acronyms, doesn’t it?
Key challenges under REDD are the definition of a ‘managed forest’ for the purposes of carbon credits, what to do about reforestation, and whether or not developing countries should be paid not to cut down their forests. If you’re interested, Friends of the Earth has just released a major report on REDD ahead of the talks.
4. China
Although China is way behind in per capita emissions, the country is now, officially, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter on an absolute scale. This, not to mention being the world’s most populous nation, makes it one of the most important countries in the quest to stop climate chaos. Until recently, the U.S. and China were both at an impasse, with each country refusing to accept binding greenhouse gas emissions targets without the other. Now, with Barack Obama pledging a new chapter in U.S. action on climate change, the ball is in China’s court. The actions they take at this year’s meeting may influence international climate change policy for many years to come.
3. Money - for adaptation and technology transfer
Moving our great big resource-munching world to a low-carbon lifestyle isn’t just about political will (although that’s a big part of it). It’s about money. In this case, the money is specifically needed for two things: adaptation, to help poorer countries cope with the effects of global warming, and technology transfer, to help other countries grow their economies in a clean, green, lean sort of way. The UNFCCC has already established an Adaptation Fund, but it’s yet to be seen whether this fund will get the money it needs. The U.S. has tried to block proposals for technology transfer in previous negotiations, but this may change under an Obama administration - remember during the debates when he repeatedly mentioned exporting clean technologies to China?
2. The United States
Well, this is a bit obvious, isn’t it? But despite the fact that the country is under new management, the current occupant is yet to move out of the White House. Because the U.S. team at the climate talks is run by the state department, it’s under executive authority - this is why the U.S. delegation in Bali was politely but firmly told to get out of the way and let the world get on with the job of solving the climate crisis. For the past eight years, the U.S. delegation has been pulling out all the stops to prevent climate progress. However, the balance of power has shifted. It remains to be seen the role The USA will play in the international climate scene
1. The Youth Caucus
This is the youth climate blog, after all. If you’re here, it’s because you already tentatively agree that the next generation is the one to watch. Youth from around the world have spent the last year preparing to hit the ground in Poland and speak truth to power. We have one climate, one future, and one chance to avert disaster.

"So welcome back y'all to our yet to be named Vlog. It has been an amazing week and we have a whole lot to report so let's jump right in.
PV news:
Last week we saw some amazing work by students as they welcomed in their new representatives.
Florida
Bessie Schwartz's volunteers came up to the state capitol from all across Florida to join local environmental organizations for the Youth Climate Change Lobby Day she organized for the special session. They met with Congressmen and legislative aides, holding their own against the utility companies arguing vehemently for clean coal in the same meeting. Afterward, Bessie canvassed the local newspaper headquarters to round up some more media, because "I know they're just sitting around waiting for something." Check out some of the hits!
Texas
Dan Cannon brought 5 students to Representative Gonzales' office in San Antonio, clad in green hard hats & PowerVote t-shirts and bearing a gift of a large welcome card for the Congressman. Rep. Gonzalez has been a Final 50 target of NWF and has yet to co-sponsor any bill requiring carbon caps. After asking his aide some tough questions about Gonzales' stances on clean energy, she got his Legislative Director in D.C. on the phone, who was quick to assure the students that passing cap and trade legislation was a top priority for Rep. Gonzalez. Check out the video here!
Wisconsin
Susan's students put on great events in Whitewater and in Madison in collaboration with 1Sky yesterday to welcome Madison liberal Tammy Baldwin and moderate southern Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan back to Congress. Susan has another event today with UW-Parkside students at Paul Ryan's OTHER office-- he won't know what hit 'em! Media hits forthcoming, but in the meantime, here's a great article in the Madison student paper that came out last week all about Power Vote:
California
Emily's Power Vote team at University of Southern California descended on Congressman David Dreier's office yesterday with a large thermometer and welcome card. They spoke at length with his staff representative, who told them that David Dreier is "keeping an eye" on wind power and alternative fuels. Emily says, "He was VERY interested in getting the names of everyone who had signed the Power Vote Pledge; he didn't expect us and it was pretty obvious that he was concerned by the idea that 1,000 people in Dreier's district were united around this issue."
News:
The big national development in the movement came from the house of representatives last week. House Democrats handed the House Energy and Commerce Committee's gavel to Representative Henry Waxman, 69, a Californian who promises a different agenda for a panel that touches nearly every sector of business -- climate change, health care, telecommunications and trade. He replaces long time Chairman John Dingell of Michigan
``The champion of the environment has replaced the champion of the automotive industry,'' said Daniel Becker, an environmental lawyer and director of the Safe Climate Campaign in Washington. This is huge news.
Google.org revised and re released their Clean energy by 2030 proposal. Obama has vowed on numerous occasions to make this a top priority and with google CEO Eric Schmidt being a close advisor to Obama, it may be a telling document to take notice of. The immediate policy proposals posted Thursday from Google.org program manager Michael Terrell and Google policy counsel Harry Wingo are:
• Change the renewable energy subsidy so it does not rely on tax credits, a policy that is less effective now because corporate profits are drying up.
• Fund existing programs to invest in smart grid technologies, which will allow consumers to monitor energy usage.
• A $3 billion appropriation to weatherize 1 million U.S. homes, which will cut energy bills by about 30 percent.
• Mandate that U.S. government agencies purchase energy from renewable sources, use energy-efficient building products, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
So as many of you know the Energy Action Coalition which is responsible for a lot of the amazing campaigns like "Campus Climate Challenge" and "Power Vote" is merely a collection of many other amazing organizations that all share a common vision that supports and strengthens the youth climate and energy movement.
The Chesepeake Climate Action Network which is often referred to as CCAN is one of those great organizations. This weeks video was composed by them and speaks for itself check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz7f3miZv64&feature=related

Iowa state university Precincts 4-5 at least 40% increase
Colorado University in Boulder - 45% increase
University of Connecticut - over 40%
University of Maryland Precinct 2117 - 122% increase
Indiana University in Bloomington - 287% increase in voter turnout
News:
Of course the biggest news item remains the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of USA
Perhaps more relevant to our world is the speculation on who will be brought in as his environment czar. Here is a rundown of who has been mentioned as possible choices as reported on greentechmedia.com
Dan Reicher
As the director of climate change and energy initiatives at Google.org, Reicher has set the investment agenda for the popular search giant. He campaigned for Obama and has the advantage of experience in the behemoth energy department: He was the assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy from 1997 to 2001. He also has served as president of New Energy Capital, a renewable-energy investment firm in Hanover, N.H, and previously held positions as an attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council and as the assistant attorney general of Massachusetts.
Nancy Floyd
As the founder and managing director of Nth Power, a venture capital firm long focused on greentech, Floyd has a deep background in the technology sector, and particularly in energy. At the Democratic National Convention in August, she delivered a speech backing Obama and promoting U.S. renewable-energy investments. She's on the board of the American Council on Renewable Energy and serves as an advisor to the National Renewable Energy Lab, run by the energy department. She founded NFC Energy Corp., a wind-energy development business, in 1982 and sold it in a deal that generated a 25-times return on the investment.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
California's leader may be Republican, but he has positioned himself as a Green Governator by supporting regulations that promote renewable energy and other greentech sectors. He signed the Global Warming Act of 2006, otherwise known as AB32, which puts the state on a path to establishing new or stricter rules and programs to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Sure, his vision of a "hydrogen highway" hasn't materialized, but his hope to have "solar everywhere" in California could. In fact, Schwarzenegger seems to be everywhere these days when it comes to announcing or dedicating solar-energy projects (see here, here and here). Hiring him to head the energy department would help Obama to fulfill his pledge to create a bi-partisan environment in his government.
Al Gore
OK, so it's a long shot that Gore would want to return to government. He has won a Nobel Prize and the freedom to champion his own clean-energy agenda, not anyone else's. But he remains a good candidate for the job, not the least because he is a renewable-energy advocate with an ample governing experience. He has played a key role in injecting climate change into the national consciousness. Obama could use Gore's advice and fame to chart new policies and carry them out.
International developments:
The issue of climate change/ global warming are most definitely a global phenomenon and so we would be amiss to not mention international developments of the movement. Being aware of these developments are critical components in our staying ahead of those that mean to hinder our push to inform the world of the dangers of climate change and global warming.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference will set the agenda for international efforts to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. It will take place this year in Poznan, Poland Dec 1-12.
* Our friend's at 350 have put together a nice campaign to invite Obama to attend check it out. They have sent nearly 50,000 personal invitations to President Elect Obama to attend the summit. Log on and send your invite to the man,
